Ethereum developers were preparing to launch the long-awaited Shanghai update (Shanghai-Capella, or Shapella) on the Goerli test network on the evening of March 14th. Then, in April, the hard fork will be activated on the mainnet.
The main feature of the update, Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 4895, is to allow validator withdrawals on the mainnet. This option was disabled during Ethereum’s transition to Proof-of-Stake consensus in September 2022, which was intended to keep it secure.
Goerli will be the third and final testnet used by developers to test the Shapella update. Prior to Goerli, since February of this year, developers have been conducting several rounds of public testing on the public testnets of Sepolia and Zhejiang.
In addition to the findings, the developers have planned three additional improvements in Shapella aimed at optimizing gas costs for certain types of activities.
