A court in Rio de Janeiro has required Gladeson Acasio dos Santos, founder of GAS Consultoria, to deposit BRL 19 billion (~$3.7 billion). The funds will be used to pay compensation to victims of cryptocurrency fraud, writes O Globo.
The decision was made on September 19. Santos was given 72 hours to perform it.
In August 2021, the founder of GAS Consultoria was arrested in Operation Kryptos linked to an alleged pyramid scheme. According to investigators, Santos acted as the organizer of the scheme – its victims were offered a yield of up to 15% per annum.
Then the police seized 150 million reais ($28.7 million) worth of cryptocurrency, $3.6 million in cash, 21 premium cars and various jewelry.
According to the publication, more than 122,000 investors suffered from the actions of fraudsters. Authorities also charged Santos with serious crimes, including murder.
Earlier, the Brazilian Federal Police liquidated Bitcoin Banco Group, the damage from whose actions for 7,000 citizens exceeded $300 million. Its leader Claudio Oliveira, known as the “King of Bitcoins”, was arrested.
Recall that in January 2022, the Brazilian authorities detained the founder and CEO of the Mirror Trading International cryptocurrency pyramid, Johann Steinberg, who was put on the wanted list by Interpol and the FBI in 2019.
