According to a federal court ruling in Rio de Janeiro, the founder of GAS Consultoria, suspected of crypto fraud, must return nearly $3.7 billion to more than 122,000 investors.
Glaidson Acácio dos Santos, a former Christian Democrat candidate, is accused of having his company GAS Consultoria linked to a pyramid scheme. Dos Santos must hand over $19 billion of Brazilian reais (nearly $3.7 billion) to the court within 72 hours of the Sept. 19 ruling.
The Brazilian Federal Police, which carried out a special operation to detain dos Santos in August 2021, reported that 591 BTC (nearly $28 million at the time) were confiscated from the suspect. If dos Santos fails to prove in court the legal origin of the funds received, the money will be transferred to more than 122,000 investors and creditors affected by his fraudulent activities.
Earlier, the federal court of Rio de Janeiro froze the confiscated funds of GAS Consultoria until the sources of the funds were clarified. Last week, the court rejected the nomination of the head of GAS Consultoria for participation in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
