In the Irkutsk region, the scale of underground mining is growing. In this Russian region, energy consumption has skyrocketed after neighboring China banned cryptocurrency mining.
Citizens of the Russian Federation living in the Irkutsk region began to massively buy up mining farms and connect them to the power grid, which caused concern to the authorities.
In Irkutsk, there was an incident this week directly related to underground mining. A local resident installed equipment for crypto mining in his apartment. As a result of the high load, the network could not stand it, and a fire started.
Employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations were forced to evacuate the residents of the house. After that, they entered the burning apartment and put out the fire.
According to Andrei Shutov, representing the regional department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the mining farm worked on the floor in the apartment. The owner was not at home at the time and the fire started due to a short circuit.
The leadership of the Irkutsk region last year turned to the federal center for help.
Regional authorities are asking Moscow to provide funding that will allow them to modernize the energy infrastructure, which is under heavy pressure due to miners.
