Go Ethereum developer Marius van der Weyden revealed information about the first “shadow” fork on the main blockchain and testnet. The fork chain was fully controlled by the team to stress test the nodes as part of the future transition to PoS consensus.
Currently, the main Ethereum blockchain runs on a PoW algorithm, in which most of the nodes are controlled by miners that mine ETH.
In parallel, in December last year, Beacon Chain was launched with nodes managed by PoS validators, where the number of client programs has been significantly expanded. The transition from PoW to PoS will be the most difficult task for which several testnets have been created to implement certain stages of the merger of the two networks.
Now the developers have managed to create a stable Kiln testnet, which should be merged with Ethereum testnets running on PoS. Shadow hard forks will help to identify and fix critical problems in advance before the transition from PoW to PoS.
Görli was the first testnet to have a hidden update. Yesterday’s shadow fork found and fixed infrastructure provider issues for Ethereum clients Nethermind and Hyperledger Besu.
Judging by the lack of forecasts of the merger dates, the problems discovered have puzzled the developers. It is likely that the PoS launch date may be delayed again for more distant lines.
