The Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation supported the proposal to legalize the production of cryptocurrencies, the department is also working with the Ministry of Finance on taxation of mining. This was announced by Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy Anton Gorelkin.
The Ministry of Energy believes that miners should consume electricity at a tariff for “other” consumers, and not at a tariff for the population, Gorelkin said, citing a letter from the ministry.
The ministry noted the risks of disrupting “high-quality and uninterrupted power supply during mass mining in residential sectors,” as this activity significantly increases the load on the power grid.
“The ministry believes that these negative effects can be offset if mining is qualified as a type of commercial activity and an appropriate taxation model is created,” Gorelkin said.
Earlier, the Ministry of Energy announced that it would be more expedient to allocate sites for mining at the regional rather than the federal level.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Construction of the Russian Federation proposed to establish an experimental legal regime for the production of cryptocurrencies.
