Chainalysis analysts have identified more than 4,000 criminal whales owning more than $25 billion in cryptocurrency
The total amount of cryptocurrencies in the dirty wallets of whales has approached the mark of $25 billion, Chainalysis specialists reported in the latest report. Analysts were able to identify 4,068 wallets holding more than $25 billion worth of “dirty” cryptocurrencies. However, “criminal whales” make up only 3.7% of all cryptocurrency whales (these include private wallets with a balance of more than $1 million).
Notable was the division of whales according to their capital. It turned out that most of the “criminal whales” received either a relatively small or a very large share of their balance from dirty addresses.
As you can see in the chart above, the segment with the smallest percentage share is the largest – 1374 criminal whales received from 10% to 25% of their total balance from dirty addresses.

Dirty addresses in Chainalysis mean the dark web, scams, stolen money, and ransomware. The dark web remains the largest source of dirty money at the time of writing. From there, about 38% goes to the wallets of criminal whales. Another 32% from the scam and 24% from the stolen cryptocurrency.
Recall that earlier the US Department of Justice reported that the FBI confiscated 94,636 of the 119,754 BTC stolen from Bitfinex in 2016. The total amount of stolen funds was estimated at $4.5 billion. Back in August 2020, representatives of the cryptocurrency exchange offered fraudsters $400 million for the return of assets. However, no one responded to the offer of the exchange then.
