Who wouldn’t want to own a Picasso? Did your heart jump when you read Picasso’s name? Yes, you got it right, the ceramic work sculpted by the one and only Picasso will become a collection of 1010 NFTs. The hand-painted work is described by his descendants, who organize the auction in conjunction with the auction house Sotheby’s.
Picasso’s granddaughter, Marina Picasso, and her son, Florian Picasso, will put up for auction 1,010 NFTs of Picasso’s hand-painted ceramic work. The Sotheby’s auction in March will feature both the original physical work, dating from 1958, and its NFT.
“We’re trying to build a bridge between the NFT world and the fine art world,” Florian told National.

Picasso’s great-grandson also suggested that this release is the first of many NFTs to be pulled from the master’s family collection of work. In addition, each NFT will be accompanied by Florian’s own contribution. He is a DJ and has recorded a track in collaboration with singer John Legend and rapper Nas. A spokesman for the family told the National that the NFTs were meant to introduce the younger generation to Picasso.
NFT is a unique digital representation that certifies authenticity. It is recorded on the blockchain, a digital database of timestamped transactions that cannot be changed, hacked or corrupted. NFTs provide proof of ownership and create scarcity by distinguishing between copies of a work and “original” digital versions.
Buyers will not own Picasso’s ceramics or image rights. They will buy digital tokens, the number of which is limited and which, as the artist’s heirs hope, will have independent value.
Marina Picasso is the daughter of Pablo Picasso, the eldest son of the artist and the only child of his first wife, Olga Khokhlova. After the artist’s death in 1973 without a will, Marina inherited a fifth of his property, including about 10,000 works of art. She has since sold some of them, including a lot of pottery.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of NFT’s work will go to a charitable organization that aims to address the shortage of nurses, as well as to a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing carbon emissions.
Although Picasso is best known as a pioneer of Cubism, he worked with a variety of mediums throughout his life, including paint, sculpture, and ceramics. He enjoyed playing with and changing art forms to experiment with fine art and come up with new ways to look at ordinary things.
Not afraid to open up new ways of perceiving art, Picasso asks us to open our minds to alternatives:
“Others have seen what is and asked why. I have seen what could have been and asked why not.”
Many of the NFT artists working on their creations today may be inspired by this Spanish icon because they are willing to experiment with new art forms that can change the traditional idea of what is considered fine art.
