Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of the Ethereum cryptocurrency project, proposed making non-fungible tokens (NFTs) “pegged to the soul.” Not all users of the social network Twitter understood what they meant, so the developer had to explain his position.
According to the programmer, a new concept for NFT is needed in order to simplify the management of decentralized solutions, which at the moment are not transferable. He noted that his idea is not new at all and is borrowed from the worldwide popular online MMORPG World of Warcraft, of which he is a big fan.
Buterin suggested imagining that NFTs would perform similar functions as all items in WoW, as they have similar characteristics. Both have a certain level of rarity and social significance, as well as a number of additional parameters and tools. He paid special attention to the second aspect, as recently the platforms Twitter, Youtube and Reddit have been actively talking about adding the function of NFT images as a profile avatar.
Vitalik noted that NFTs should act as a reflection of a person’s wealth, rather than the ability to acquire specific pieces of digital art. The expert is also sure that most of the tokens on the market should be used for good purposes, and not for banal speculation.
According to the creator of Ethereum, in addition to reflecting wealth and savings, NFTs can act as a so-called proof-of-presence protocol (POAP). It will be a new standard according to which tokens are distributed among the participants of certain events.
Earlier, the editors of Crypto.ru reported that Vitalik Buterin expressed his negative attitude towards cross-chain applications. He noted that he was very concerned about the security of bridges.
