The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has officially announced a ban on the use of its logo when creating non-fungible tokens.
NASA states that the world-famous management logo is too often used for commercial purposes, such as branding fashion products.
As a rule, images and video content of US government agencies are not protected by copyright. However, NASA in its statement calls the creation of tokens with its symbols illegal:
“NFT is essentially a digital property that exists in a single copy and belongs to one person. We do not want our content to be used in this way. It is illegal to claim rights to our materials.”
At the same time, the space agency does not oppose the use of the logo, video content and images by the media, educational institutions and authors of educational materials.
Notably, in the past, NASA has been indirectly involved in an NFT project called “mars4”, which created a detailed 3D model of Mars using agency data.
In 2020, two American technology companies were developing blockchain-based software for NASA to improve communication between drones.
