Blockchain technologies allow users to transfer not only digital money, but also property rights to any objects: images, audio recordings, collectibles. Such assets are listed on a distributed ledger as non-fungible tokens (NFT). In the future, the owner can sell them, making a profit from the growth in value, or store them in his virtual collection.
According to the analysts of the DappRadar project, in 2021 the turnover of NFT tokens amounted to about $ 23 billion. Users mainly purchased and sold unique images. In particular, in October 2021, a picture from the CryptoPunks collection was sold on the exchange for $ 532 million. This operation aroused a lot of suspicion, but generally illustrated the interest of users in non-fungible tokens.
As follows from the infographic, in December 2021, the market capitalization of many NFT projects exceeded $ 50 million, while the expected sales price of some collections reached $ 2.66 billion.
The largest project at the end of 2021 was the selection of Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT tokens. The authors of the collection have created 10 thousand unique images that can be bought using a smart contract on the Ethereum network. The minimum price for one picture in January 2022 was 69.99 ETH. To purchase the entire collection, the user needs to give at least 699.9 thousand ETH, or $ 2.67 billion.
The second place in the ranking was taken by the side-project Bored Ape Yacht Club called Mutant Ape. The total capitalization of the tokens in this collection was 218.2 thousand ETH. A feature of the Mutant Ape Yacht Club is the ability to transform an ordinary NFT token from the Bored collection into a “digital mutant”. Picture holders bought a “serum” and used it to modify the initial image.
The third place in the list of the best NFT collections of 2021 was taken by a selection of LAND from the game project Decentraland. In this virtual world, users can own “plots” of the metaverse, hold contests and earn money on staking. Capitalization of LAND tokens exceeded 117.9 ETH, or $ 449 million.
