The US Federal Trade Commission has issued a warning about a new type of fraud. Criminals only need a cryptomat, a QR code, and social engineering skills.
The essence of the scam is as follows: the fraudster calls the victim and pretends to be an official, a law enforcement officer or a utility company. After a short conversation, he asks the person for money under any pretext. If the victim agrees, the fraudster offers to go to the nearest cryptomat and buy cryptocurrency. After that, he sends the victim a QR code with his wallet number and the money is automatically transferred.
Often scammers pretend to call on an ad from a dating site or congratulate a person on winning the lottery. The US FTC warns citizens: “No government employee will ever ask to pay with cryptocurrency. If someone asks you about this, you should know that they are scammers. “
In 2021, scammers around the world stole $ 7.7 billion worth of cryptocurrencies. And the number of cryptocurrency crimes in the United States is increasing by about 300% every year.
