The Irkutsk Region was among the Russian regions leading in terms of the scale of underground miners’ activities.
In parallel, the number of other offenses increased. Scammers use crypto-hype and deceive citizens.
Irkutsk police this week detained two people suspected of stealing money from Russians who want to start crypto mining.
The regional department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that residents of Miass (Chelyabinsk region) were detained. They posted an ad on the internet offering help to set up and run a mining farm.
Citizens contacted the suspects and asked them to help launch equipment for mining cryptocurrency for a fee. The criminals demanded money in advance, and after receiving it, they disappeared.
The victims turned to the police for help. Law enforcers detained the swindlers in Tyumen and sent them to Irkutsk.
The victims were about 40 Russians, but only 16 of them turned to law enforcement officers. 400,000 rubles and a mining farm were seized from the detainees. Now they are giving testimony, the Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasized.
