About five hours ago, a Reddit user under the nickname Nwa1g posted a message that he found a scammer on Instagram posing as Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.
According to him, this person or group of people “is pulling followers into classic cryptocurrency scams.”
A passionate Reddit user warned others about the scam and asked the Ethereum community to vote to publish it so that as many people as possible knew about the problem.
He recalled that Vitalik Buterin does not have an official Instagram account, which the fraudster decided to take advantage of, gaining 643,000 subscribers.
The difficulty lies in the fact that due to the absence of an official Buterin account in this social network, it is impossible to report on the extradition of one person for another.
The fake account @buterin_official with 576,000 subscribers in question is registered in Israel and posts sponsored ads on photos with Vitalik. This account has been on Instagram for over two years since 2019.
According to Nwa1g, the people behind the fraudulent account encourage their subscribers to send them direct messages containing passphrases for crypto wallets, or persuade them to send them cryptocurrency, promising to receive three times more in return.
If you enter the name “Vitalik Buterin” in an Instagram search, you will see more than a dozen accounts, many of which are called “Vitalik Biterin_official”.
