Members of the crypto community are faced with rising electricity prices.
Power engineers began to raise tariffs for miners through the courts. Kommersant writes about this with reference to episodes from the practice of Irkutskenergosbyt.
- According to the newspaper, representatives of Irkutskenergosbyt were able to raise tariffs through a court for miners who work in private houses in the region. To do this, the company’s employees had to prove that members of the crypto community use electricity for commercial purposes, despite the fact that its cost was originally calculated for domestic needs.
- Kommersant drew attention to the fact that the Irkutskenergosbyt team filed 85 claims against the miners in court for 73.3 million rubles. Of these, as of this writing, the power engineers managed to win nine. The miners who lost in the case against Irkutskenergosbyt were transferred to commercial tariffs.
- The Irkutsk Region attracts cryptocurrency mining-oriented members of the crypto community with its low cost of electricity. The region is also suitable for miners in terms of climatic conditions – low temperatures help save money on organizing equipment cooling.
- In addition, the region attracts members of the crypto community with its infrastructure. In Irkutsk and nearby cities, there are many abandoned factories, as well as other buildings and structures from the times of the USSR. Such buildings are suitable for organizing mining farms. Thus, the ruins of Soviet industry turned Siberia into a cryptocurrency mining center.
Recall, against the backdrop of pressure from the Chinese authorities on miners, in October 2021 Russia entered the top 3 largest centers for the production of digital assets. RF, in terms of the amount of computing power aimed at cryptocurrency mining, is ahead only of the United States and Kazakhstan.
