St. Petersburg police have detained a 27-year-old resident of Novosibirsk, suspected of stealing funds from bank cards and transferring them into cryptocurrencies.
According to the investigation, the attacker installed a hidden camera on the ceiling of one of the shopping centers and monitored the pin codes that the visitors of the center entered while using the ATM.
A device for reading data from plastic cards was built into the ATM itself. The information received made it possible to make duplicate cards and withdraw money from accounts.
Investigators believe that more than 100 citizens became victims within two months. The amount of damage exceeds 12 million rubles. The stolen funds were transferred to controlled accounts and then converted into cryptocurrencies.
One of the organizers of the criminal scheme was detained by operatives at the Novosibirsk railway station. His laptop and communication equipment were seized.
The suspect was taken into custody as a preventive measure. His accomplices are being identified.
Earlier, ForkLog reported that a suspect in stealing bitcoins in the amount of 350.6 million rubles was detained in Tomsk.
